"Kitna ration milta hai?" (कितना राशन मिलता है) is one of the most common questions from UP cardholders. The answer depends on your card type and, for Patra Grihasthi cards, on how many members (units) are on the card.

The amounts below come from the National Food Security Act rules published on nfsa.gov.in and from the Union Cabinet's PMGKAY decision. The wheat and rice split comes from a district news report, so we flag it clearly. We are an independent guide, not a government website.

Entitlement by card type

Under NFSA, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY, अंत्योदय) households get 35 kg of foodgrains per household per month. Priority Households (PHH, पात्र गृहस्थी) get 5 kg per person per month. Both are confirmed on nfsa.gov.in.

About the wheat and rice split: the split is from an Amar Ujala report on the May 2025 distribution in Sultanpur district (9 to 25 May 2025). We did not find a statewide official order for it. The split may change by month or district, so check the notice at your ration shop. The totals (35 kg and 5 kg) are the national NFSA rule.

Is the ration free?

Yes. On 29 November 2023, the Union Cabinet decided to give free foodgrains to about 81.35 crore beneficiaries for five years with effect from 1 January 2024, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), at an estimated cost of Rs 11.80 lakh crore. Five years from 1 January 2024 runs to 31 December 2028 by our calculation. Grain has been free since 1 January 2023 under the integrated PMGKAY, as reported by PRS.

So you should not pay for your NFSA wheat and rice. If a dealer asks for money for the grain, note the details and complain. See our helpline page.

Ration calculator: work out your quota

Our ration calculator on this site does a simple sum using the rules above. You can also do it by hand:

  1. Find your card type. It is printed on your card or shown in the portal details. Our list guide shows how to look it up.
  2. If AAY: your family gets 35 kg a month, whatever the family size.
  3. If PHH: count the members (units) on the card and multiply by 5 kg.
  4. Split it (optional): using the reported UP split, multiply units by 2 kg for wheat and by 3 kg for rice.
  5. Compare with what the ePoS slip shows at the shop.

The calculator does not ask for your card number or Aadhaar, and it does not check any government record. It only multiplies numbers you choose.

PHH, 5 members25 kg10 kg15 kg
PHH, 7 members35 kg14 kg21 kg

Why you may get less than expected

  • A member's name is missing. Each missing PHH unit means 5 kg less. See how to add a name.
  • e-KYC is pending. Districts have stopped ration for units without KYC. A Jhansi report said no ration in September 2025 for units without KYC, followed by suspension and deletion. Complete it using our e-KYC guide.
  • The card was inactive. Under the TPDS (Control) Amendment Order, 2025, cards with no grain lifted for 6 months are temporarily disabled until verification and e-KYC.
  • Someone else lifted part of it. Under One Nation One Ration Card, a member working elsewhere can lift part of the family's grain at another shop, and the family at home gets the balance.

Other NFSA benefits

NFSA also covers meals under ICDS and the mid-day meal scheme, and a maternity benefit of Rs 6,000, as stated on nfsa.gov.in. These are run through separate schemes and offices, not through the ration shop. Ask your Anganwadi centre or school for details.

Frequently asked questions

How much ration does a UP ration card get per person?

On a Patra Grihasthi (PHH) card, each person or unit gets 5 kg of foodgrain a month. A district report from Sultanpur in May 2025 gave this as 2 kg wheat and 3 kg rice per unit. Antyodaya cards get 35 kg per card regardless of family size.

Is ration free in UP in 2026?

Yes. Under PMGKAY, the Union Cabinet decided on 29 November 2023 to give free foodgrains to about 81.35 crore NFSA beneficiaries for five years from 1 January 2024. You should not be charged for your NFSA wheat and rice at the fair price shop.

How much wheat and rice does an Antyodaya card get in UP?

AAY cards get 35 kg a month in total. According to an Amar Ujala report on the May 2025 distribution in Sultanpur district, that was 14 kg wheat and 21 kg rice. No statewide official order for the split was found, so check your shop's notice.

Until when will free ration continue?

The Cabinet decision says five years with effect from 1 January 2024. By our calculation that runs to 31 December 2028. PRS describes it as approved to continue until 2029. Watch official announcements for any change.

Why did I get less ration this month?

Common reasons are a member's name missing from the card, pending e-KYC for some members, an inactive card, or a family member lifting part of the quota in another place under ONORC. Ask the dealer to show the ePoS slip, then check with the supply office.

Does the ration calculator need my card number?

No. The calculator on this site only multiplies the number of members by the NFSA rule and the reported wheat and rice split. It does not connect to any government record and never asks for your card number, Aadhaar or OTP.
