In Uttar Pradesh, each person on a ration card is counted as one unit (यूनिट). For a Priority Household (पात्र गृहस्थी) card, every unit is entitled to 5 kg of foodgrain a month, so a missing name means less ration for your family. A name that should have been removed, for example of a member who has died, can also cause problems during verification.
This guide explains how a name is usually added or removed (राशन कार्ड में नाम जोड़ना या हटाना), which documents people are commonly asked for, and what is still not confirmed. We are an independent guide, not a government website. We do not take applications or collect any personal data.
When you need to add or remove a name
Common reasons to add a member:
- A child is born in the family.
- A daughter-in-law joins the family after marriage.
- A family member was left out when the card was first made.
Common reasons to remove a member:
- A member has died.
- A daughter has married and moved to her husband's family.
- A member has moved away permanently and wants a separate card in another place.
- A name appears twice, on your card and on another card.
Remember one central rule: under the TPDS (Control) Amendment Order, 2025 (as reported in July 2025), no person can hold a separate ration card before reaching 18. So a young adult who wants a new card of their own must be at least 18. If you are not sure whether your family qualifies at all, read our guide on UP ration card eligibility.
How the process usually works in UP
Third-party guides say that additions, removals and other changes are made by filling a modification form at a Jan Seva Kendra (CSC) and submitting it with documents. New card applications in UP also go through Jan Seva Kendras, where the operator submits them on the UP e-District portal and gives a reference ID, according to a Tribune report from September 2024. We could not confirm the exact official modification process on the live UP portals, so treat the steps below as a general outline.
- Check the current card first. Look up your card on the official portal and note exactly who is listed. Our UP ration card list guide shows how.
- Visit a Jan Seva Kendra or your supply office. Ask which form is used for adding or removing a member, and which documents they need for your case.
- Fill the modification form. Write names exactly as they appear on Aadhaar.
- Attach documents. Carry originals and self-attested copies.
- Collect the receipt or reference ID. Keep it safe. You will need it to track the request.
- Track the request. Use the application status option described in our UP ration card status guide.
- Do e-KYC for the new member. Once the name is added, the member may need to give a thumbprint on the ePoS machine at the ration shop.
If the office tells you something different from this outline, follow what the office says. Procedures and menu labels change.

Documents people are commonly asked for
There is no confirmed official document list for UP changes. For new applications, third-party guides name Aadhaar of all members, passport-size photos, a bank passbook, residence proof, income certificate, electricity bill, gas connection receipt and a mobile number. For changes to an existing card, the type of document depends on the reason. The table below is a practical starting point only. Confirm the list at the Jan Seva Kendra before you go.
| Situation | Documents to carry (confirm locally) |
|---|---|
| Newborn child | Birth proof of the child, Aadhaar of the child if made, head of family's Aadhaar, ration card number |
| New bride | Proof of marriage, her Aadhaar, proof her name was removed from her parents' card if asked |
| Death of a member | Death certificate, ration card number |
| Daughter married out | Proof of marriage, ration card number |
| Permanent migration | Proof of new residence, ration card number |
Under the 2025 central order, for children under 5, Aadhaar is collected where available, and e-KYC must be done within one year of the child turning 5.
Removal of names by the department
Names can also be removed without your request. Under the TPDS (Control) Amendment Order, 2025, cards with no grain lifted for 6 months are temporarily disabled, followed by field verification and e-KYC within 3 months. A Jhansi district report (Amar Ujala, August 2025) said units without KYC would be suspended for 3 months and then deleted. In 2025, UP deleted 5.97 lakh ineligible cards, according to a Rajya Sabha reply reported by ETV Bharat in March 2026.
If a name was removed by mistake, go to your supply office with Aadhaar and your card details, and ask how to restore it. Doing e-KYC on time is the simplest way to avoid this. See our UP e-KYC guide.
Can you add a member through the Mera Ration app?
The Mera Ration app is made by the National Informatics Centre for One Nation One Ration Card. Mera Ration 2.0 was launched on 20 August 2024 with more features, as reported in the news. Some third-party guides and app reviews mention managing family members in the app, but this is not confirmed as an official feature, and it is not confirmed for UP. Do not rely on the app alone for adding or removing a name. Use the Jan Seva Kendra or supply office route, and use the app only to view details if it works for you.
Avoid agents and scams
- Never share an OTP or your Aadhaar number with an unknown caller who says they will add a name for you.
- Be careful of websites that look like government sites and ask for card or Aadhaar details. Use only the official portals listed below.
- Do not pay extra money to a dealer or middleman to add a name. Ask the supply office what charges, if any, officially apply at a Jan Seva Kendra.
- The government does not charge for e-KYC at the ration shop beyond what is officially allowed. If someone demands money, note the shop number and complain. Our helpline page lists the numbers.
After the name is added
Once a member is added, the family's monthly quota rises. For a PHH card, each added unit means 5 kg more grain a month, free under PMGKAY for five years from 1 January 2024. Check the new total using our UP ration entitlement guide. If the ration shop still gives the old quantity after the change shows on the portal, ask the dealer to check the ePoS entry, then contact the supply office.
Frequently asked questions
How can I add my child's name to a UP ration card?
Third-party guides say you fill a modification form at a Jan Seva Kendra and submit it with documents. For a child, carry birth proof, the child's Aadhaar if made, and the head of family's details. The official document list is not confirmed, so ask the Jan Seva Kendra first. Keep the reference ID to track the request.
How do I add my wife's name after marriage?
Her name usually has to be removed from her parents' card and added to yours. Visit a Jan Seva Kendra or your supply office with proof of marriage and her Aadhaar, and fill the modification form. Ask the office whether they need proof of removal from the old card, since the exact UP rule is not confirmed.
How do I remove the name of a family member who died?
Take the death certificate and your ration card number to a Jan Seva Kendra or the supply office and ask for the modification form for removal. Removing the name keeps your card records accurate and helps avoid trouble during verification and e-KYC checks.
Can I add a name online myself on fcs.up.gov.in?
A self-service online option for citizens on fcs.up.gov.in or nfsa.up.gov.in is not confirmed. Reported routes go through a Jan Seva Kendra, where the operator submits the request. If you see an online option on the official portal, use only the official site and never share OTPs with others.
Can my son get a separate ration card?
Only if he is 18 or older. Under the TPDS (Control) Amendment Order, 2025, as reported in July 2025, no person can hold a separate ration card before turning 18. New cards are issued first come, first served, and states must publish a waiting list.
How long does it take for a new name to show?
No official time limit is confirmed for UP. Track your request with the reference ID using the application status option on fcs.up.gov.in, as reported by guides. If it stays pending for a long time, ask at the supply office or call 14445.
